Building Connections

Family photos empower a sense of belonging.

Walk into any home and you are likely to see photos on display.  Photos remind us of family, events, holidays and good times shared with people that are important in a person’s life.

Photos help define spaces as our own while at the same time display our connections with our broader community and life.

In recent months staff at Dundaloo have supported participants to collect family photos to display them around their home in order to ‘bring family’ into their
home spaces.

This has had a profound impact on the stories people are sharing in their homes.  Memories are being triggered and participants are talking about family and places where they belonged.

This increased continuum of belonging has empowered their sense of identity and connection with previous life experiences.  As you talk with participants about their stories you see how valued they are and you feel privileged to have had them share with you.

For some their greatest sense of belonging is Dundaloo, and the women they have shared much of their life with are significant and important people – people they relate to as family.  We respond by recognising and respecting our place in their experience – one where participants share their lives and we support professionally and with dignity.
